Here Are 8 Movies About Love Intricacy and Its Realistic Ending You Should Watch

Have you ever come across a film that tells a story about love intricacy, but when you saw the ending, you thought it was unrealistic and far-fetched? Sometimes, when we watch a love story movie, the endings are only made to entertain us, ignoring the reality of life. It can be good for our dopamine to feel a little something, right? To escape the reality of love? However, people also need a realistic portrayal of love. Love isn't always a fairytale. Here are 8 movie recommendations that portray love intricacy and its realistic endings.

1. Malcolm & Marie (2021)

Filmed in all black and white throughout the entire movie, Malcolm & Marie is showing how love is not all colors. The movie follows Malcolm and Marie, who just got back from Malcolm's movie premiere. Marie brings up her jealousy towards Malcolm's co-star, whom she thinks crossed the line towards Malcolm. Marie, who is a traumatized woman, feels like her feelings are invalidated the whole time by Malcolm, who sees her as valuable only in the entertainment industry. The fluctuating emotion in the arguments between Malcolm and Marie is the highlight of the movie. The story is told in one night, which makes their intense argument more felt. Exploring the emotions within a relationship, this movie will make you see the reality of love.

2. 5 to 7 (2014)

The movie first showed a writer named Brian, who has been having a hard time publishing his writings, coming across a French woman named Arielle on the side of the road. He approached her and started a conversation to get to know her better. She says she's always in the same spot, from 5 to 7. They start to hang out every day from 5 to 7. After becoming comfortable with each other, Arielle reveals to Brian that she is married and has two children. Their uncertainty made Brian confused about whether Arielle actually loved him. The movie 5 to 7 explores the complexity of a relationship based on differences in ideology between Arielle, who thinks having an affair is normal while not wanting to determine status with Brian, and Brian, who demands certainty in their relationship.

3. Lost in Translation (2003)

A famous actor named Bob Harris travels to Tokyo to shoot a commercial for Japanese whiskey. A girl named Charlotte is accompanying her photographer husband. Bob has no feelings for his wives anymore, and Charlotte feels lonely in marriage. They meet at a bar, and they suddenly connect. They develop a connection filled with deep emotions and significance. Lost in Translation depicts the idea of having a connection with someone but knowing you can't be with them. Escaping from their problems, they're each other's temporary fix.

4. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

Packed within a unique way of storytelling, 500 Days of Summer used someone to narrate the love story between Tom and Summer, except the narrator himself tells the audience that the movie is not a love story. The movie is actually about two people who are colleagues at work. Tom has a crush on Summer and tries to get to know her. However, Summer does not reciprocate Tom's feelings, making their relationship complicated. Summer wants no relationship, while Tom always sees the possibilities in Summer. The complexity of Tom and Summer's relationship is caused by their lack of commitment. A time leap is used to showcase the complexity of Tom and Summer's love, highlighting how long they have been connected to one another despite struggling to understand one another.

5. Before We Go (2014)

Before We Go is the epitome of someone's only coming into your life for a while but changing your entire life. Brooke, who lost her way out of New York City because she missed her train, suddenly meets a street performer, Nick. The brief encounter leads to both of them traveling through New York City. They found a connection with each other. Unlike anyone else. Brooke feels that she has a stronger connection with Nick than she has with her husband, while they roamed around New York City and got each other out of their comfort zone the entire night. While both of them understand that they cannot be together, they make the most of the night. The movie explores the beauty and fall of love.

6. In the Mood for Love (2000)

The movie started by showing a married couple who moved into the same apartment building. Chow's wife has been too busy at work, so Chow is often alone. So does Su Li-Zhen. Her husband is often at work. Both Su Li-Zhen and Chow befriend each other and discover their partners' infidelity. Now that they share the same fate with each other, they begin to feel something more than friendship. They formed an indescribable connection that they didn't receive from their partners. Through its cinematography, In the Mood for Love portrays the yearning state of possibilities. Although not many narratives were spoken, this movie will give you the bittersweet feeling of experiencing the intricacy of love.

7. Before Sunrise Trilogy (1995)

There are three movies in the Before Sunrise movie franchise, including Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight. Not much happens in terms of the plot itself, yet the film is well-known for its poignant narratives throughout. The movie explores the beauty of life from two people's perspectives. The franchise started with Celine, who got off the train in Vienna with Jesse, a stranger she met on a train. In just one day, both of them found an indefinable chemistry with each other. However, with miscommunications, they eventually move on with their lives until they rekindle in the second movie to figure things out. The intricacy of love in the franchise is explored in the next two movies, where Celine and Jesse figure out their relationship with all of their complex personalities. The movie shows you the reality behind fairytale love, the hard pill of truth to swallow, and the conversation it takes to get clarity.

8. Marriage Story (2019)

The movie Marriage Story is a story about two individuals who failed to maintain their relationship, leading to divorce. Both Charlie and Nicole have experienced five stages of grief, such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It's a difficult process to begin with when you work in the same department as your partner. Charlie is a successful theater director in New York City, while Nicole works alongside him as an actor in his play. There will be ego, your own wishes, and misunderstandings when you're in a relationship with your co-worker. In the cases of Charlie and Nicole, the misunderstandings accumulated to the point that they were no longer manageable. The story exploration is relatable and gut-wrenching.

All the movies above showed how movies are not always showing the fairytale side of love, but also the reality of love. Falling in love is not always a feeling of happiness and butterflies; love can also have its lows. The intricacy of love is part of loving as a human being. And last but not least, because I don't put any spoilers in the movie descriptions, you might go ahead and watch them yourself. Experience the bittersweet endings of them all.
